We are delighted to welcome Angela Lawrence to The Wallington Gallery.
A successful and talented artist who has been elected as Artist Member for the Glasgow Society of Women Artists.
Her landscape paintings, while ranging from a semi-abstract to a more representational style, mainly evoke the changing moods of the hills and sea in Scotland. Elements which are of recurring interest to her include the effects of the ever-changing light on the land, with glimpses of small areas highlighted for brief moments, the softening, calming effects of distance and the allure of distant horizons. She likes to portray particular places in Galloway and also the Highlands and the Western Isles, which people will feel a connection with, though the locations are often transformed by memory and imagination.
Her latest series of work called “Sea Spirits” looks away from the land to focus on the sea in close-up, capturing the movement of the water and impressions by the shore. She received a Visual Arts Award 2011 from Creative Scotland and Dumfries and Galloway Council to pursue this theme in the Outer Hebrides, and this has helped to develop her current practise, concentrating further on the many challenging characteristics of the sea, including the flickering of light and colour in its depths and shallows, and the sounds and rhythms of the sea and how it moves between pebbles, rocks and in the wind. The series is on-going as she has found the subject increasingly stimulating and intriguing. It provides an excellent contrast to her landscape work which is often more still and quiet.
Angela has exhibit widely and frequently around the UK, as well as running her own gallery, Clience Studio, in Galloway; exhibitions have included at the Royal Scottish Academy of Art Edinburgh, Glasgow Art Fair, The Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, The Affordable Art Fair, London, Compass Gallery, John Green Fine Art and the Gatehouse Gallery in Glasgow.
