James Govier (1910 - 1974)

Born in Oakley, Buckinghamshire. Studied at Swansea School of Art where his teachers included William Grant Murray. He was  influenced by the works of Constable, Rembrandt, Degas and Chardin. A traditionalist who disliked commercialism and modern influences. Augustus John and Dylan Thomas were friends of Govier. He served with the Royal Air Force during World War II making models of the D-Day landings and Dambuster raids. An important exhibition of his work was held in 1993 at Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich. His works are held at the National Museum of Wales and Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea.
