William John Baker was born at South Shields. The son of a draper he decided at the age of 22 to pursue a career as an artist. He quickly established himself as a popular artists and teacher.  Although he travelled extensively throughout the United Kingdom and abroad he preferred scenes around South Shields and Cleadon Village. His illustrations appeared in local publications.
