Carter took up painting when he was given a painters outfit to dispose of by a friend. As he became more accomplished it was obvious the he was a talented artist.
He began exhibiting his work at the Bewick Club, Newcastle and in 1898 sent his first work to the Royal Academy, 'Vale of Aln'.
He became a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy, The Royal Hibernian Academy, The Suffolk Street Gallery, Royal Cambrian Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters.
Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle, Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead and South Shields Museum hold examples of his work.
